Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
This is the second module in the "research" stream for the pre-qualification programmes in Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Speech and Language Therapy. This module builds on the content of Enquiry in Healthcare 1 to provide foundation for the development of a research project proposal.
Total hours scheduled are 72 over 12 weeks. Teaching begins one week before the standard semester.
Enquiry in Healthcare 1 (1114) will be a prerequisite for this module
Syllabus:
Development of a Research question; database search; critically appraise research literature; write literature review; qualitative and quantitative methodologies, data analysis; SPSS; Proposal Writing; Ethical Considerations; Oral and visual presentation of preliminary proposal; research governance.
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
Synthesise and critique research literature to generate a clear rationale for the proposed research project.
Recognise and address potential ethical issues within a proposed research project, including dimensions of diversity.
Select appropriate statistical analyses for a range of data.
Demonstrate applied skills for a range of methods of data analysis.
Develop an understanding of the ethics procedure by contributing to the submission of a project for approval by the relevant ethics committee
Affective (Attitudes and Values)
Resolve any conflict that may arise between personal beliefs and ethical considerations.
Acknowledge international perspectives of proposed research project.
Psychomotor (Physical Skills)
Present and defend proposed research project to group of researchers.
How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
This Interprofessional Education module across the four Clinical Therapies programmes will use a blended approach with a range of face to face and online content for core content. Additionally, discussions and tutorials will occur within small groups face to face and through e-discussion forums.
Sessions re statistical analysis will include some lab based sessions with software.
